Grouse colors...

Recommended Posts

Funny, I should have been up as well. I am a diagnostic sleep specialist, so I'm often up at all hours of the noc as well!

Tippman, I'll shoot you an e-mail.

uplander, I'd love to get back down that way. I miss hunting a lot of my old haunts down toward Hill City, Swatara, Aitkin, etc.. Monday's rarely work for me, but Thursdays and most Friday's do. Shoot me an e-mail sometime, mjbreuer at charter dot net.

From the other thread it looks like you guys did pretty well near Isabella! That's a long haul for me, and I don't think I'll make it over that way anytime soon. I would love to however! Hopefully this week or next I'll head to Ely for some sprucies.

Yeah it was a haul and none of the other hunters we talked to had any birds at any point in the weekend. We felt guilty and just said we've seen a few. Plenty of moose and wolf tracks. We did work hard to get our birds. If you get the chance to go up there get off the trails. Lots of lazy hunters but lots of birds. I guess not every grouse likes to "pick gravel" all day.

Well I had the absolute best color day of my life last week. Saw 6 birds and knocked out 3. I plucked a decent spectrum, and managed to double up on a pair of copper-banded birds. The dogs retrieved the red on red a little hard, but the giant red on gray is perfect. Top 10 in size and color I've ever shot. I'm making a spot on the wall already... wink

The red on red was a single and the red on gray was in the covey of three. I tossed some lead but only knocked down the initial king drummer, and I'm thankful for it!

matthothand, did you ever take pics of the spread? I would love to see it, with sprucies mixed in, it'd be a beaut of a pic!

Man those are nice looking grouse!

I looked at my fans and all of them are gray with a black stripe.

In the 20 years of tromping around for grouse I don't recall ever seeing a brown/red one??? Weird that I have never shot a spruce grouse either! I guess I have to become a better shot smile

my dog-less stats so far Ferny 0 for ~20 flushes.

my 14 yr old daughter...1 for half a dozen flushes smile

I would like to hunt behind a dog sometime to see what it's like.

I just can't sell the wife on a dog...yet! Now that my kids are 11 and 14 I think it's time!

Would anyone like to volunteer you and your dog for a weekend day...say late Nov/early Dec? I have plenty of spots 2 hrs north of metro.

Thanks,

Ferny
