So tell me what do you say????

23 posts in this topic

Anyways i have been talking about ice fishing in class and no one really understands why i love the winter so much, and i tell them i love ice fishing. If there was one place that i could be any time any where it would be ice fishing. So then the second question that comes out of thier mouth after i tell them that is " why do you like ice fishing" and i tell them its just being out there away from everything. Ice fishing can be an extreamly social event and also a solitary thing it all depends on where you wanna fish, and if you feel like an adventure. It can be a run and gun event or it can be a pick one place, drink beer and wait for the fish to find you...

Kind of an odd thread but...what do you all tell people when they ask you why you love ice fishing so much??

I just say I love be outside year around. Pulling a big fish through the ice is a great moment. You get to go out on warm days and hang out with folks. It's just a great time.

I tell people " its a very unique challenge that few people in the world get to do. And I love a challenge, fish also seem to taste better during the winter months, and who doesnt like to eat fish?"

For me it's all about the excitement of pulling that fish through the ice. It's great to see the work that you put in and it pays off. It's great to be outside and having a fun time with friends and espcially during winter, when most people would be inside complaining of the cold grin

I know a lot of people that like ice fishing more than open water. I'm about 50/50 myself. Sandman said it best, it's about being in the outdoors year round. It's tradition, It's easy once the house is set up, just sit there and listen to the hum of the flasher. Oh MAN i can't wait now.

For me it is a multi answer question.

1. It makes the winter go by alot quicker than if you stayed indoors dreaming about warmer weather.

2. I love the feeling of standing on any body of water (ice) and fishing it without a boat.

3. It is a challenge getting fish to bite when they are more lethargic in the winter time.

4. It keeps me fishing all year round which makes me very happy.

it's solotude and getting together with freinds

it's standing on water and the puzzle of getting the fish to bite.

it's the feeling of accomplishment when you get the puzzle right

it's the cold yet warm in the porty or better yet the perm

it's being one with nature

it's far better than sitting home waiting for summer

it's fishing clamly with no bugs and not having to worry about boat control in a 20 mph wind

it's incredibly peaceful (until some jerk-bait starts a generator)

it's sitting on your couch watching satleite tv, drinking a beer, eating a pizza and waiting for the rattle reel to sound all at the same time

it's way too long to wait for ice!

I don't have to worry about

wind

rain

heat

current

large waves

trolling motor

anchors

where my bait is

if I have bait on

do I have enough gas in the boat

is the launch going to be full

no jet skis, tubers, skiers (I don't have a problem with them!)

Its just easier when you think about it?

It's where I find peace and solace from the world we live in. It's something everyone needs but few have found.

I think it's great to be outdoors year around. I also just like the challenge of trying to catch fish thru the ice.

It's easier to pee out of a fishhouse than it is a boat!

The fact that you can go anywhere on the lake(for the most part)spending time with friends and family, catching fish, cooking in the fish house, leaving the fish house on the lake and being able to drive right to it. Ability to go hole hopping to stay on fish if you want. Itdefinitely is a great activity that you have to experience to understand.

When asked why I love ice fishing an then ask, first tell me why you love to do what you do, one guy love golf an just could'nt wait till spring, an I asked why? he said on any given day I can have the worst game an then I hit it, that one swing when everything is perfect an I put it right where I want it, that's what keeps me golfing. Same thing I said, ya just never know how many or how big a fish is till that bobber gose down, you can have the worst day of icefishing but when that bobber gose down or the rattle reel starts to tick or you flasher lights up like a x-mas tree, an kids are screaming dad I got one! Man Thats just the best ever. Boar

It gets me away from the hustle and bustle of everything during the "cold months." Plus, I can remember catching certain fish through the ice more than during the open water. IMO, it's funner to bring a cat in through the ice than during open water.

Also, you get to walk on water!

I tell people that ice fishing is for the highly accomplished sportsman. The less accomplished play hockey.

Because....if I couldn't fish for 6 1/2 months, I would go insane.

Because....cabin fever is for non-fisherman.

Because....there is no such thing as The Bikini Couch Potato Team.

Because....whomever asks me why I love ice-fishing...(Ah..Duh), will not be on the ice to ask me more stupid questions.

For me it is real simple.....i am a video game junkie, and a fishing freak! And ice fishing is the perfect blend of both! I tell people all the time that Vexilar is the greatest video game I have ever played! People that read this know what I am talking about when a red blob all of the sudden comes off the bottom and starts making its way to your lure...OH BOY!!!!

And it gives the term "FLAG UP!" a whole new heartbeat. A tip up flag in the air is one of the prettiest sights ever!!!!

My girlfriend can't find me in a sea of blue fishtraps.

That and, its the simplicity of being able to just sit there and fish if you want to. Nothing better.

    •     I have ordered a couple of time from them. They have some good panfish tackle. My order this time was $75 due to the fact that friends and family also wanted some jigs. When you out fish them 2 days in a row they take notice
    • Like Papa Bear said, unless you have 14' sheets you will have more seams.  Not only will you have to deal with the vertical seams on the studs but you will also have to deal with the horizontal seams.  More seams = more money and more chance for a leak.  VHB tape is not cheap so the less you have to buy the better.
    • 44 IN THE BOAT HERE ON HIDDEN BAY. One thing you always can count on here at Lake Iwanttobethere is that after a lousy day there will be a nice day. Warmer, party cloudy skies and it is warm where I sit at my desk here in the den. The brown dog is at my feet, his paws on my right foot keeping tabs on me. Yesterday was a rain day and normally I look forward to rain days as they give me time to catch up on indoor projects. Rain days in the dead of winter however do nothing more then create work. Ground is frozen so all we have is runoff which here in the cabin means a wet floor in the basement. Overnight the water freezes and now we quickly go through the ice melt trying to get rid of the ice so it is safe to walk on the sidewalks. Ranger Rick is reporting that his trail system at Samantha Lake is a mess. The rain and warm weather has eaten away at his trails. The short cut across Samantha Lake is not recommend to use as their is water on the ice and getting on and off the lake is unsafe at best. No fishermen on the lake yesterday but then again it rained more then a half an inch. Big hockey game on tonight the Wild against the Black Hawks. We will see if putting the seventy inch TV in will draw a beer drinking crowd. I would love to be there but have been under the weather the past few days and will be watching from home. I have gotten a few e-mail’s asking about Lake Iwanttobethere and it is a good time to be a little more clear about the Lake. The wife has never had her named mentioned in the eleven years I have been writing about the lake. She told me she did not want anyone to know her name so she is always refereed to as "The Wife" of my four kids only the boys names have been used as they own business in town, the daughters have never had their names mentioned except the one who paints is sometimes spoken about as at Christmas she paints store front windows. None of the eight grand kids names have been mentioned but they are often refereed to a granddaughter number two or grandson number three. The two ten year olds are spoken about often and are refereed to as "The Tenners" Almost every one in town is based on someone I know. A few of them have passed on but I still write about them, kind of my tribute to them. I could still be writing about my old dogs Bud and Barney as they left me with a ton of stories untold but I shared my loss with you over them and have moved on. Now I leave it up to you how much the Lodge and Resort are. One of you called the Resort a bar and it is far more then that. The Lodge is a place for members to hang their hats. There are lockers in the basement for their stuff and a chair in the Main Room to sit and be left alone. Not everyone drinks, for example everyday Tom sits at the end of the bar with a cup of coffee every morning and does his crossword puzzle. I never mention him much because that is just what he does. The FELLOWS on the other hand seem to be doing something all the time that you may find interesting. The Resort is a place for the guys to get away from the Lodge if that makes any sense.   The Resort has become like our Lake Iwanttobethere old guys home. Marv, Elmer, DOC and Vic are the core and none of them are married and they are doing just fine thank you. Chuck, Hammering Hank, Skinny and I are the next wave, the in betweeners so to speak. Married but still looking for a hideaway. Where is Lake Iwanttobethere? I’ll save that for another day.
    • Season has been over for awhile but now I have a couple of Grouse who just strut in my back yard taunting me. Duncan has tried to put the fear into them but no matter how quick he is they are up in the trees before he can get halfway across the yard. He does come back with that stupid lab look on his face so I guess everyone is enjoying themselves here late in the winter. I hope to hear them drumming this spring.
    • cool!!  and thanks again for the info!!  i look forward to getting it.
    •  Used to, then he lost it to Vince and Nick Cage in a Segway race on Tropicana.
    • Your going to like it. Definitely not "the best", but still definitely worth the money. Mine came slight damaged... one of the flanges where the leg attaches to the barrel was bent slightly. It was easily fixed but I decided to contact RK about it... They said to send them pictures, and within 2 days I had a phone call offering either a full exchange or $100 credit to my card. I gladly took the credit. I fired it up around Xmas time in 15-20 degree weather. I was worried how it would do in the cold. It handled it like a champ and only took about 15 min longer to smoke an entire pork loin.
    • Unless you have a source for 14' sheets you would end up with vertical and horizontal seams. No real problem with that, that I can think of.
