Sorry to hear you won't be able to experience opener. In my opinion, opener is the best hunt you'll have for the next month at least. I don't know why you would miss it? We have found a little hole (through aerial photos) not many people know about. Its a flyway between 2 swamps. We always have a blast, and never been rained on. Been hitting the same spot for about 10 years now. And only seen 1 other hunter their. Plus it is plenty big for 2 groups.

Sorry your missing out

I agree, after the first two weekends most of the locals move out and its slow. If your lucky the northern flight might stop in minnesota for a weekend. I'll be down south as well but west a couple hours.

I was just making fun of the spectacle @ Pelican. I am going to my in-laws hunting shack where we have been doing opener for 4 years now. The hunting is great and it sounds like there are alot of birds up there this year. I would never dream of missing opener, I can barely sleep at night just thinking about it. Actually I find myself going to Cabelas every day buying some new toy just to feed my duck hunting addiciton.

The northern flight is very hit or miss in MN. One day you'll have thousands of mallards coming to the decoys.....the next day, Their all gone. Reminds me of sunday after opener. Never had much luck the day after opener. Get a few, but nothing like the day before.

Openers of any thing just aren't my thing......I'll take a quiet day on the slough with the chance at a few birds in November over the busy opener any day....

There are birds to be found as the season moves on, just need to look in the right places.

I love opener I will be headed back down to kato for opener. not a great spot but I cant break tradition with my dad and brother in law. even if we dont shoot a ton I like hunting with them. Day after the first sunday can be a great hunt. not as many people and a decent amout of birds.

I agree with riverrat. I do my serious duck hunting around MEA week and on from there. I will be out looking for walleyes. And why do I always see people saying that if they shoot ducks or catch fish it's a bonus??? Come on, that is like saying I go to work everyday and if I get paid on Friday it's a bonus. I go fishing to catch fish, I go hunting to shoot ducks, a bonus would be a 30 inch walleye or a banded duck or goose.

We are skipping opener in MN this year and heading to ND. First time were missing MN opener in 10 years as a group. We are just not seeing many birds in our normal spots. I hope ND has a couple birds we can shoot.

morefishplease i say shooting ducks is a bonus because I work 50-60 hrs a week. And after all that work I enjoy just being outdoors and watching the birds work or just sitting in my bow stand. The act of shooting is a very small part of the hunting process. Depending on people situations just being out could be great or they need to shoot a limit. I was like you when I was in h.s. and college but things had to change. I wish I was in your situation. good luck to all

I'm headed to a farm near Hutchinson for our annual duck camp, arrive on Friday leave on Sunday, plus I get to try out my new Otter Stealth, I can't wait it'll be a blast, pun intended.

Morefishplease - To answer your question, becuase they (I) am out there to relax, get exercise, enjoy the outdoors, and spend time with my friends and family. Catching fish is the goal but not a necessity to have fun. If I just wanted meat I would go to a grocery store. No offense but your version of hunting and fishing sounds like a high stress way to spend your leasure time. And your work analogy makes no sense, I go to work to earn money.

"THE OPENNER" is so retarded I dont even know why I go, but when you only have 60 days better go when thier is time on the calender or your gonna miss out, I would rather miss the openner than all them mallards when most guys are wearin blaze orange I shot more ducks last year in late october thru november than the first few weeks of the year the key to gettin mallards is diffenatly going during the week when everyone else is at work. the ducks stick around but when you have tom Dick and harry shootin at teal buzzin around your mallards seem to tuck away and then jump shooting is key. another thing is go mid morning and shoot them on the way back not on the way out, many times last year I would just be dumpin my rig in and eveyone was already loaded up and headed for home cuz they woke up to early.
