Members Only Fluid Forum View   08/08/2017

Fluid forum view allows members only to get right to the meat of this community; the topics. You can toggle between your preferred forum view just below to the left on the main forum entrance. You will see three icons. Try them out and see what you prefer.   Fluid view allows you, if you are a signed up member, to see the newest topic posts in either all forums (select none or all) or in just your favorite forums (select the ones you want to see when you come to Fishing Minnesota). It keeps and in real time with respect to Topic posts and lets YOU SELECT YOUR FAVORITE FORUMS. It can make things fun and easy. This is especially true for less experienced visitors raised on social media. If you, as a members want more specific topics, you can even select a single forum to view. Let us take a look at fluid view in action. We will then break it down and explain how it works in more detail.   The video shows the topic list and the forum filter box. As you can see, it is easy to change the topic list by changing the selected forums. This view replaces the traditional list of categories and forums.   Of course, members only can change the view to better suit your way of browsing.   You will notice a “grid” option. We have moved the grid forum theme setting into the main forum settings. This makes it an option for members only to choose. This screenshot also shows the removal of the forum breadcrumb in fluid view mode. Fluid view remembers your last forum selection so you don’t lose your place when you go back to the listing. The benefit of this feature is easy to see. It removes a potential barrier of entry for members only. It puts the spotlight on topics themselves, and not the hierarchical forum structure. You as a member will enjoy viewing many forums at once and switching between them without leaving the page. We hope that fluid view, the new functionality is an asset that you enjoy .

Catching All Small Bass, Where Are The Big Ones?

Recommended Posts

I don't target bass very often but I've been going after them lately with my 5 year old kid, who is super into casting crankbaits and rattle baits right now.

We've been fishing the east end of Tonka (clear water) over deep weeds (12-15 fow) and catching a lot of bass ...... but mostly 10 inchers. I've tried moving deeper and tried plastics on the deep weedline but it hasn't made a difference.

So ..... why are we catching tons of little bass with only a few bigger ones mixed in? Thanks for the help.

Craigums is correct.

Try to go to a bigger bait so you are going to mistarget most of the smaller fish. Try to throw a jig or a 10' worm.

Perchie-- Would love to help out on this.. but it could be a ton of things.. Bigger bait may work.. Try a Jig Pig... But if your catching small bass like you said, often times like many species, fish school by size to a point. Without knowing the spot its hard.. I would try that area out past the weed edge and look for hard bottom. OR go shallower and plunk a heavy jig through the milfoil, and again.. look for hard bottom.

When do you know when it's jig and pork time or pitching big worms? What do you guys look for?

In your own experiences, are there bigguns around when you have lots of juvies around and biting?

There is catching bigger bass, but there is also getting your limit for league.

I know what Perch is getting at. I fished league with him a couple weeks ago.

Its a quandry. 3 hours of league to get 6 bass, or 3 hours of league to get a couple bigguns. Its tough.

My take is fill the well with 6 bass, and hope for something bigger later, IF you have time. 3 hours is not much time to get overly creative.

i too would suggest jigs and worms if only cause the though of my little girl (4 1/2) tossing lures with double treble hooks scares the bujesus out of me.

if your little one likes to reel, maybe a spinnerbait would do the trick.

He's been casting for quite a while and I'm not too worried about this anymore. He started casting with a jig under a bobber, then moved to spinnerbaits with 1 hook, and now he's moved on to crankbaits and rattlebaits. I make him wear his sunglasses when he's casting and only let him do it when it's just the two of us in the boat. He's good at hooking his own fish when he's casting and retrieving these baits, but I don't think he'd hook too many with a jig or plastic worm yet so I haven't had him try that yet. Although I fished plastic worms that last time we were out and only got small fish on them too. We fished around more than 50% of a large bay, caught bass almost everywhere, but they mostly tended to be very small fish.

I'd say upsize the baits, like others have said. Last night I caught fish 14-19.5 inches only - 6" senkos, 10" worms, and a jin n pig with a 10 inch worm trailer. The GF got a 13-14 inch fish on a 1/2 oz spinnerbait.

Tis the season, big bass harder to come by.

Wont be long and they will be easier to find and catch, we just need the temps drop a little.

Average high just dropped to 80 and is falling, as soon as we get a week of temps that dont go over 80 too much, fishing will get better.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm going with location as the main culprit. I moved a short ways out of that particular bay and started catching larger fish on the same baits, up to 17 inchers ...... still a lot of small ones, but definately larger fish. Today I ran back to the small bass spot and started catching them right away, once again all small ones.

    • Yeah baby!!!  Huge congrats to both of you.  Look at that smile!  Great work dad and great work son!!!
    • On Saturday my boy got his first crack at a bird.  We walked in and had nothing close, but must have been in their way to whatever they were going to.  An hour later and he had his first turkey. 18.3 lb. 1/2 inch spurs 9 3/4 inch beard  HUGE smiles Proud dad   The bird gave us a heck of a show and came within a step of brushing the blind.   We also made it back to cook up Maple Syrup with the rest of the crew at thew cabin.
    • Well hopefully today is the last of the Fernando Rodney experiment.
    • that is certainly a dream!
    • Atta way, Cheetah!  Congrats!!!
    •   WTG Cheetah!  They still give you two tags each out there?  Still hunting, or coming home early?     Stick with it PFunk, once that hens slips away he'll come back lookin' for some plastic love.
    • And on a day where i am kicking myself for not bringing the DSLR, why wouldn’t a nice bearded hen come by just outside the window...
    • Working on punching dad’s archery tag and had this guy hang up at 40 yards for a good half hour outside of his comfortable shooting range. Had 4 jakes on the decoys earlier trying to breed them but the tom stayed out at about 60 with a live hen. Fooling the big boys with the bow is proving to be a challenge. Wow is it fun and frustrating as hell at the same time.
    • Brother and I doubled this morning in my shortest Black Hills public land hunt ever...   3 hours from time of leaving the car.      Parked the car and had turkeys gobbling on the public side of the road right where we planned to go.   Two gobblers dropped down into the field in front of us at first light and bred a hen right there.   They almost came in to us once the hen left them, but changed their mind and walked over the hill to the rest of the flock.  After a couple hours of cat and mouse we managed to get in front of them and after one close call with a blow down in the way had a second chance and were able to take both gobblers at the same time.   37yd shot for my brother, and 44yd shot for mine.
    •   I see a pattern I hate to see from any player....Granlund in the last 2 seasons combined: April 2G/3A   Playoff Totals last 2 yrs combined 1G/4A    Those are terrible end of year stats for any player...I just think he is too small and plays even smaller...when the going gets tough he disappears..he probably is just worn out come late in the season and we need players who can step up when we need them most.
