Auto pilot shuts off when turning?

My Minn Kota auto pilot turns off when turning with the foot control. When I am done turning it snaps back on and continues working. Does anyone know what would cause the prop to stop while turning the motor?

My guess is the main board is getting type of weird back feed through it.

My older auto pilot does the same thing. My foot control gets dirty and the switches/connections inside aren't contacting right...in a pinch I simply give it a dunk in the lake and it works again. It's easy to disassemble the old style foot controls and give a thorough cleaning.
