McCains Path to Public Service

69 posts in this topic

Not wanting to hijack hooked's thread, I thought I would throw this in for good measure, I mean, after all I think we all want to strive for a fair and balanced HSOforum.

OK, I’m going too really get you guy’s going now. Here are McCain’s credentials for entering politics. Oh, and if my next meeting is canceled I just may have to find, and post, all the flip-flopping McCain is now doing to gain votes from the left wing of the Republican party. It’ll take me awhile because the list is sooooooooo long.

This is from the site: THE U.S. VETERAN DISPATCH

Before John McCain's tour of duty in Vietnam, he married Carol Shepp, a model from Philadelphia. On his 23rd bombing mission over North Vietnam in 1967, McCain was shot down and captured.

While he was imprisoned, Carol was in an auto wreck (1969), thrown through her car's windshield and left seriously injured. Despite her injures, she refused to allow her POW husband to be notified about her condition, fearing that such news would not be good for him while he was being held prisoner.

When McCain returned to the United States in 1973 after more than five years as a prisoner of war, he found his wife was a different person. The accident "left her 4 inches shorter and on crutches, and she had gained a good deal of weight."

Yearning to make the grade of admiral, McCain enrolled in the National War College at Fort McNair in Washington, D.C. and underwent physical therapy in order to fly again. The Navy excused his permanent disabilities and reinstated him to flight status, effectively positioning him for promotion.

In his book, The Nightingale's Song, Robert Timberg chronicled McCain's post-Vietnam military assignments and some of his "adulterous" behavior leading to his divorce from Carol and marriage to Cindy Hensley.

Timberg wrote, "in the fall of 1974, McCain was transferred to Jacksonville as the executive officer of Replacement Air Group 174, the long-sought flying billet at last a reality. A few months later, he assumed command of the RAG, which trained pilots and crews for carrier deployments. The assignment was controversial, some calling it favoritism, a sop to the famous son of a famous father and grandfather [both were Navy admirals], since he had not first commanded a squadron, the usual career path."

While Executive Officer and later as Squadron Commander McCain used his authority to arrange frequent flights that allowed him to carouse with subordinates and "engage in extra-marital affairs." Such behavior was a violation of the Uniform Code of Military Justice rules against adultery and fraternization with subordinates..

Timberg wrote, "Off duty, usually on routine cross-country flights to Yuma and El Centro, John started carousing and running around with women. To make matters worse, some of the women with whom he was linked by rumor were subordinates . . . At the time the rumors were so widespread that, true or not, they became part of McCain's persona, impossible not to take note of."

In early 1977, Admiral Jim Holloway, Chief of Naval Operations promoted McCain to captain and transferred him from his command position "to Washington as the number-two man in the Navy's Senate liaison office. It wasn't long before the "fun loving and irreverent" McCain had turned the liaison office into a "late-afternoon gathering spot where senators and staffers, usually from the Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees, would drop in for a drink and the chance to unwind."

In 1979 at a military reception in Honolulu, McCain met Cindy Hensley, an attractive 25-year-old woman from a very wealthy politically-connected Arizona family. Cindy's father, Jim, founded the Hensley and Company, the nation's third-largest Anheuser-Busch distributor.

McCain described their first meeting, "She was lovely, intelligent and charming, 17 years my junior but poised and confident. I monopolized her attention the entire time, taking care to prevent anyone else from intruding on our conversation. When it came time to leave the party, I persuaded her to join me for drinks at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. By the evening's end, I was in love."

While still married to Carol, McCain began an adulterous relationship with Cindy. He married Cindy in May 1980 -- just a month after dumping Carol and securing a divorce. The newlyweds honeymooned in Hawaii.

McCain followed his young, millionairess wife back to Arizona where her father helped catapult McCain into politics,

All references to slick Willy will be ignored by me as he is not running for president.

Kid, so the whole point of that long post was to point out that McCain cheated on his wife after spending 5 years away in a POW camp? OK, point gotten.

fishorgolf - It's pointless. Read about 95% of the political stuff posted on this HSOforum. A lot of folks drank too much of the CNN/WCCO/NBC/Star Tribune news kool-aid and are too far gone to be saved.

I think you guys are way off base. Homer Simpson does not have the experience to lead this country.

Vote Grandpa Simpson. He would be as good as the two clowns running now.

A agree limitout. Anytime someone posts something with a conservative slant they are accused of drinking the FOX Koolaid. FOX is ONE station compared how many Left leaning news sources that are out there!

Here’s a video of an informal press conference McCain held in Michigan.

The audio is a little tough to hear, so to clarify, McCain insisted that “we have succeeded” in Iraq. In fact, he said it multiple times: “I am happy to stand in front of you to tell you that this strategy has succeeded. It has succeeded. It has succeeded.”

(It reminds me of the time Marge Simpson told Bart that Springfield is “a part of us all. A part of us all. A part of us all.” She then explained it would help him remember and believe the line if she repeated it this way.)

OK, McCain probably misspoke again. He must have meant that he thinks Bush’s strategy is “succeeding,” not has “succeeded,” right?

Wrong. He’s now referring to Bush’s Iraq policy in the past tense, as if the war is over.

This Guy has LOST HIS MIND! He is a complete joke. "What did I say" "What"

It’s possible John McCain decided he doesn’t really want to be president after all. It’s a tough, demanding job, and maybe McCain came to the conclusion he’s just not up to the task. It seemed like a good idea to him last year, but maybe he bit off more than he could chew. It’s too late for McCain to bow out, but he can ensure his defeat by saying the most breathtakingly dumb things imaginable.

Take Social Security, for example, one of the most popular and successful government programs in American history. McCain recently said he supports privatizing the system. Then he said, he doesn’t want to privatize the system. Then he said he would privatize the system, he just doesn’t want it to be called privatization.

Listening to him talk, it sounded as if John McCain, after more than a quarter-century in Congress, simply didn’t know how the Social Security system works. And this week, McCain proved that he simply doesn’t know how the Social Security system works.

It takes more than a conservative slant before I will accuse someone of drinking the FOX koolaid. Maybe something like the only thing Obama accomplished is being the senate 143 days. If you believe that you are on the FOX Koolaid.

And for just being one station, they sure do leave a lot of ignorant people in their wake. Gotta give them props for that.

I am starting to get the feeling I am being spamed here.

It isn’t spamming, it’s just having someone pointing out that the emperor has no cloths. The vast majority of the conservative responses on this and other threads is pure rhetoric and never backed up by fact. The most recent example is that of Uncle Bill stating Obama is going to increase our taxes and give that money to the illegal’s, and that almost immediately followed a post where I showed he cosponsored a bill, with McCain, that comes down hard on illegal’s. I just wish some of this stuff was backed up with some fact and as we’ve seen, FOX news is perpetuating the misinformation on a daily basis. Now true, there are also liberal sites that do the same but the liberals/Dem’s on this board usually back up their statement with fact s, not simple rhetoric.

p.s.

I kind of started this thread with my tongue firmly planted in my check as a response to Hooked’s thread but I am amazed at the reaction of some folks.

Maybe the wrong word for it but I just get this feeling there is a little more to petepeters posts than just passion for his beliefs. But then I could be wrong which will not be the first or last time.

Having said that, What else could be my motivation, other than posting things that make mccain, republicans, fox news, bush, cheney, fisher eek , rove, pawlenty, coleman and others look bad or sound foolish??

    • Perhaps you are associating peanut butter with sweet things, like cookies or peanut butter cups.   But peanuts aren't sweet and can work in savory things as well.   Asian food seems to do that with peanuts a lot, just as an example.   African food also.
    • Man, I can see cream cheese but peanut butter? I may have to give it a go sometime, maybe the bacon will off set the oddness?
    • Sorry I missed that. The brown and blue wires are the Transmit TX and Receive Rx wires for connection via single cable to NMEA 0183 compatible devices. nmea 0183 is the protocol for compatible devices, computer, plotters, auto piolet, Radar, radio, etc. All of these devices including your GPS can be connected to a single cable. The brown and blue wires allows the sonar to communicate to other devices. Google nmea 0183 compatible devices for a raft of information on what this is. My brother, a charter Capitan out of Cortez FL. uses these devices on his boat for off shore fishing up to 100 miles off shore. Nice to have to talk to other Capitan's ship to shore, radar, GPS and  to get back home without running into sunken islands.

    • I ask the same thing about the other 2 candidates, especially the one that is your favorite.   What do you care? I thought he was irrelevant anyway?
    • Oh yeah.  I keep forgetting about all that modern computer stuff in cars.   So the computer would notice the tranny didn't shift all the way down as the car stopped?     There goes that theory.    And why only after a couple hours of driving?   Some sort of overheating of the transmission fluid?  cooler plugged in the flush process?    Here is a question for Carpmaster..... Is it different in the summer vrs winter?   Like you only have to drive 50 miles in summer and 200 in winter?   You guys that actually know can feel free to ignore my suggestions if you don't want to waste time answering.
    • leech, it does sound like an odd concocktion.  but you gotta try it.  225 for 2 hrs, helps if u use thin bacon.
    • nw wisconee private marsh
    • Sorry, I thought the model was listed on the title of my question.  Anyway, Garmin 53dv EchoMap.  This one has downview, but is chirpless.  Seems like nice unit, tough.  Just wondered about those 2 wires.  Thanks.
