Trailer Hooks

6 posts in this topic

Do you use trailer hooks? We landed 1 fish yesterday on a spinnerbait. The lure came with a trailer hook, but the fish was hooked by the main hook and the only thing the trailer accomplished in this case was foul the net and make it tougher to get at the hook that was in the fish's mouth. the Knipex made quick work of that hook though!! The fish swam away with a ton of energy, but got me to thinking that I could prolly do without trailers unless I'm getting a bunch of short strikes. What do you think?

thanks - erik

Trailer hooks to me are a LAST resort and only used when no matter what I change in hookset, presentation etc. will not work. I have some in my box but I honestly have no idea when the last time I used one was.

I fish with them yes. All i've caught on spinnerbaits have come on the trailer.

EDIT: by trailer you mean having a big second hook on the spinner bait?

Jeff -

Yep - I'm talking about the second hook. I can't say they're a bad idead, I was just wondering if they're necessary. I have also noticed that with several spinnerbaits, depending on the angle of the arm, in many cases all the fish would get would be a mouthful of spinner instead of a hook.

For me that trailer hook is a necessity and I wont use a spinnerbait that doesn't have one. I really like the rad dog because that last hook is really far behind the blades and it allows you to put a twistertail on without it being totally concealed by the skirt. While fishing in Canada I had caught so many fish on my Rad Dog that the barb on the first hook got pinched down and I lost a nice pike because that trailer slid right off.

Long story short now I wont fish without them.

Im headed over to thorne bros within the hour to pick up a new rad dog for tomorrows musky hunt...

Good Fishin'

I just looked, all my muskie spinnerbaits have the trailer, but I should say most mine are Rad Dogs.

Crappieman is right on here, the Rad Dog baits are one of the best values for the dollar out there. Both ofr big pike and muskies. Very versatile, trolled, slow rolled or over the cabbage/milfoil tops.

Hugo: I see your point but two hooks are a lot easier to deal with than triple trebles! You'll catch far more with the trailer left on. Like Crappieman said, a plastic on there can be a BIG trigger. Nice job on the fish by the way!

    • Great idea, Purple!!!  I've done the Chili Dogs and Cody Sticks from Curley's.  Both are excellent!
    • What exactly are you trying to say here? That we should follow the advice of a chiro instead of a MD? My MIL's doctors have been trying to avoid surgery of her colon tumor but if they end up doing it it's because they are just looking for a payday? Is that what you are trying to say? Or that she should just ignore it and keep doing what the wack job chiro says (he said she was cured when in fact her tumor had grown exponentially)? I have several ailments that surgery could be an option. All of my doctors have recommended the less invasive route for each one. Same with my wife and my children.
    • I have one, my works great.

    • There's millions of 8 x fish houses out there on 2 skids, I think you'll be fine. Are you using 2x6's for the floor on 16 inch centers and running the plywood the right way? I only say 2x6 because weight usually isn't a factor on a skid house and they make a rock solid floor, but it is probably overkill to many.  I still think you should brace them though.
    • Doesn't matter much who signed it at this point, since neither party has made an effort to repeal it.   Top priority on Obama's list is to push the TPP before he leaves. I presume this will be his retirement sweetener.... http://www.wnd.com/2016/08/its-official-obama-to-send-congress-tpp/
    • Small tarps are even cheaper.
    • One more thing I forgot to add, are the insulated wheel well covers worth it? Wanted to get something at least to protect the wheels in the summer from mud/sun etc., but came across insulated covers for like $200 bucks. Worth it for the money or just get some cheap wheel covers at like fleet farm?
    • I don't know who is considered the winner of the debate but what I do know is that if we the people actually vote one of them into potentially the highest office in the world we will be the losers. Neither of these boneheads is presidential material and I can't stomach either of them representing me to the world or being in control of our military. They both spent more time fighting, arguing, and interrupting each other so bad it completely distracted the attention away from the topic of the discussion.  I couldn't help but wish the moderator of the debate had a switch to turn off the microphones whenever they got out of hand. Of course if he did, it would have been a pretty quiet debate. Talk about a pair of idiots! We the voting public seem to forget these two people are applying for a job and we are the ones that are doing the hiring. I opened the door and let them in to my office Monday evening and a few minutes after they opened their mouths I escorted both out by the nape of their necks.
