Question for Outfitter...or anyone who cares to reply

Recommended Posts

I was just curious if there were any good walleye lakes on the Cedar Narrows Road. I am sure there has to be, but I don't know names, or where. Just looking for something to carry a canoe or a 12' boat into for a little fun. Mainville/cuddle has been slow, I am tired of fishing Rainy. Just looking for a little lake to spend wednesday on.

Thanks in advance guys!

I am assuming there is a way to carry a boat into these though?

I unfortunately did not make it up the cedar narrows yesterday...instead I spent the day pounding nails on a roof. Thanks for the info guys

For future reference Pickwick has a decent walleye bite on most days. Pickwick has a good ramp, although it is somewhat steep. I haven't been back to Straw in 5 years, but the ramp was in good conditon then. Timberwolf Resort should be able to give you some current information. They are located almost at the Cedar Narrows Road junction with 502. Straw would be my pick for walleyes. Essox has great smallmouth bite and there are some lakers to be had.

The main road curves right around the lake. There is not a boat launch, you have to take a small boat and carry it across the road. It is a smaller lake Southwest of Vista on the map(not named on my map, but I think there is a sign along the road). The ramp on Straw is pretty shallow after all the heavy rains a few years back, a roller trailer works best.

Hey Bill,

You won't have a problem getting into straw with a 12', but if anyone is trying with a bigger boat or with one with bunks - you may have a problem.

Superbee is right the ramp is very shallow tappering and you need to be out about 50yds before it drops off.

Good Luck

Last year we hit Straw/Sucan and it was a great time. Friday, I'd like to hit Pickwick before we go to Outfitter's Outpost cabin on Manitou. Anyone have any tips on fishing Pickwick?

Thanks,

The points and reefs on the far end from the launch are usually pretty good. The best thing to do is troll cranks until you pick up a few, then start jigging. It won't take long to locate them that way.

It is mainly numbers, but it does produce a few big ones on occassion. Let us know how you do. If you plan on live bait, I would use leeches, they have been working best everywhere it seems.

Similar,

I would also pick up some crawlers just to be safe. From what I have been seeing the past few days the bite is starting to swing to crawlers around here and on the small warmer lakes it might have already switched. I am heading to straw on Saturday, so we will find out.

Hey Craig,

I am heading over there on saturday with 2 bunk trailers. There is a hole off to the right of the landing where the trailer drops down into. It worked good a couple of weeks ago when I was there, I am assuming with all the rain we have gotten the past few days the water will be up and getting in will be no problem.

The important thing is that you will be able to drop the boat in with the 2wd.

Dont worry about getting it out...Matt probably needs a portage boat on that lake anyway laugh

I think I better just stick to Pickwick this time. It's new water for me anyway and it looks like a pretty good boat ramp.

Thanks, I can hardly wait!

Thanks Hoffer,

Unfortunately, my "fish" brain thinks like that sometimes! smile

Hey, cant remember if you are up there by now - or leaving soon??

Either way - hope the trip goes great - and I look forward to a full report and of course pics when you get back.

Wish I could run up for a few days and join you - but just got back from Chicago and have more travel this week...so it isnt in the cards. I am jealous. Catch lots of fish, have fun - and most importantly - safe travels.

    • Careful, man.  Any such suggestions get criticized pretty heavily.  I came here around this time last year and posted something similar, and I hadn't been on this forum for quite some time.  My question was met by one of the mods with mock & ridicule.  But he thought that was okay as long as he put a smiley face or an lol after every sentence.  Funny, funny guy.  No wonder it's a ghost town around here.  Too bad, this was a must-read destination back in the day.
    • Here are a couple pictures from our WI season. We were able to take 5 birds. Two of us had two tags and one buddy just had one tag. Really think the predators in the area have these birds learning to be silent. They do not gobble much and if they do it’s mainly morning before fly down 2 or 3 times at the most. Over that last 5 years it’s been like this the first 10 years gobbling was heard through the day but now you don’t hear that gobbling in the distance or to calls very often. Still come to calls but almost ways silent now which is fine they still come in.   Finally all done and food plots are almost finished love the spring time.
    • Congrats on the bird
    • Congrats on the bird.
    • Assume you were in a blind since you are bow hunting.  That is a long time ...  active bird or no bird.   Very Nice.
    • Way to go!  That's persistence!
    • Way to go Britt!
    • So our bear friend came back today and she brought somebody with her. It might be time to quit feeding the birds sunflower seeds until next fall.
    • I picked up that double bag deal about a month ago at Home Depot here in Sioux Falls. Ironically it was the same weekend we had the big April snow storm.
    • I see Home Depot advertising for Memorial day but no Kingsford double bag on sale. Has anyone seen any on sale anywhere? I am down to my last bag and need to stock up, Memorial weekend is usually the time to do it.
