Grass for mulch?

4 posts in this topic

Is it a good idea to use grass clippings as mulch over bare dirt areas that I've newly seeded? If so, how thick should the clippings be spread on top?

Thanks!!

This is a great idea. Just completely cover the dirt. Don't make the layer thick, keep it thin but cover the dirt. The grass clippings will help retain moisture and provide a slow release fertilizer source.

I've used the clippings. I spread enough to cover the seed but you can still see the dirt.

Good to hear guys! I cut grass yesterday and saved the clippings just in case. Looks like I'll be using them now!

Thanks for replying! Much appreciated.
