Preventing Undergrowth

Last fall I cleared out a thick wooded part of woods on my lot. The reason was to get some air flow and sun back there to get the soil to dry out a little. It was mostly overgrown undergrowth. Now that I have it cleared out I was wondering what I can do to keep it from growing back. I can't get the mower back there because there are too many small stumps I don't want to risk hitting. Also last fall I burnt the tall grass that was remaining back there. Does anyone have any ideas on how to prevent the undergrowth from coming back. I was thinking of spraying it with weed/undergrowth killer. But I want to see if there is a better way of doing it.
