boat electronics locked? response.

Question

AWH,
I tried posting a response to your post but it was locked from what I could tell.

Do you already have the X-85 or are you planning on buying it? The reason I ask is if you already have it, they are a fine unit and it would be worth keeping but if you are planning on buying one, you should take a look into considering some of the newer technology that has come on the higher end units of late. A friend of mine had an X-85 side by side with a Pinpoint and I must say there was quite a difference in the detail the Pinpoint was able to show. It also does a better job of reading the bottom in more of a real time which is helpfull when coming up onto shallow spots at high speeds. I've now switched to the pinpoint stand alone (meaning I don't have a pinpoint trolling motor) and am really impressed.

I don't have any experience with the zercom you mention but I think Zercom makes a good unit. I have a pro 40 flasher for ice fishing that I really like.

I haven't bought the X-85 yet, but I intend on doing so. I would probably go with a Pinpoint if I was willing to spend more. The X-85 was originally more than I was willing to spend. But Reeds just knocked their price down to $300, which is the price range I was looking at. So I figure I can't really go wrong there with all that I've heard about the X-85.

Thanks for the response. Anybody have any experience with Zercom's Z 160?

I had an X-85 on my old boat, and pulled it before trading the boat in. My new boat has a Bottom Line and I plan on going with a Pin Point motor an graph in the spring -- so I have no use for the X-85. $300 is a great price, but if you want to go with a 3 year old unit, I would let it go for $180.00.

I have seen some of the Zercom units in action, not sure of the models, and they all performed very well. Like the Pin Point units, the Zercom runs more "real-time" and has great target seperation.
