Motor question

Double

Question

Hello,

I just picked up a 1986 40HP Evinrude tiller. It seems to run well except it idles rather fast. Can someone please explain to me how to slow the idle down, or is this something I should take it to an expert for?

Thank You,
Double

I had an '88 40 Johnson, it might be the same (?). There should be a little turn knob just behind the kill switch on the end of the tiller handle. It's kind of in disguise, but the black knob will turn and adjust idle.
If it doesn't do that, then the carb needs adjustment with the idle screw. Fairly simple.

I have a 1985 25 hp Johnson tiller so maybe it's the same adjustment on yours. On mine towards the rear of the tiller arm, there is a bolt with a knurled head and a spring to keep pressure on it once it is adjusted. It is simply a stop as to how far the throttle is open when you close the throttle. It is a very simple adjustment if yours is the same.
