3rd Annual Doug Horsted Ice Fishing Derby

Recommended Posts

Hope I'm allowed to do this; guess if not, it will be deleted.

We are having our third annual event in memory of our good friend and South Dakota sportsman who passed away three years ago. The derby will be at Lake Brant this year on Sat. Jan. 18 from 9:00 a.m. to noon and registration begins at 8:00 a.m. at the Shipwreck Supper Club on the east shore of Lake Brant, which is just north of Chester.

$15.00 entry fee and 100% of the entry fees are donated to Avera McKennan Cancer Unit in Doug's memory. In addition to the cash prizes of $100, $75, $50, and $25 for the four largest fish (all game species) we will be having door prize drawings with all registered participants eligible. Door prizes include an underwater camera, Canaries tickets, fishing equipment, and a bunch of other miscellaneous prizes donated by local businesses.

Hope to see you there.

bumpety bumpety bump bump

Just another friendly reminder for our fundraiser. If you are planning to hit the ice this coming sat. the 18th, why not come to our derby at Lake Brant near Madison. As mentioned above, we are giving some $ cash prizes and so far we have about 25 door prizes to give away by drawing including Canaries Tickets, Sioux Falls Storm tickets, golfing passes, tubing and ski passes to Great Bear, ice fishing rods/reels, other fishing gear and some other miscellaneous items. And of course the underwater camera with a retail value of $300. All cash and prizes have been donated by area businesses so 100% of the $15.00 entry fees will be donated to Avera McKennan Foundation to be used by the foundation in helping cancer patients from all over the area (not just Sioux Falls)

Hope to see you there. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. at Shipwreck Supper Club on east shore of lake and fishing goes from 9:00 to noon and prizes to follow. Purchase your bait and tackle ahead of time as they do not sell bait there.

Despite the cold and high winds, we managed to have slightly over 100 participants. Largest fish caught was 3.25 lb. northern. The 2nd through 4th place winners were all walleyes and weighed between 1.5 and 2.5 lbs. About ten fish total were weighed in. We ended up with about 60+ door prizes to give away in addition to the underwater camera so most participants were able to take home a door prize.

In addition to the $15 entry fee, we sold additional chances at the door prizes. Additionally, Annette at our headquarters location, the Shipwreck Supper Club, had a spaghetti feed Sat. night and donated the profits to our beneficiary, Avera McKennan Cancer Foundation in Doug Horsted's memory. I don't have an exact total yet, but I'd estimate the total donation should be close to $2,000 total.

So despite probably about the worst possible day weatherwise that we've had this winter, we had a successful event and will likely have a 4th annual event next year at the same location. So hopefully a few of you that weren't able to attend this year can come next year and we can make an even bigger donation in Doug's memory.

ps. If any of you were there and have any comments or suggestions for next year, be sure to post them.
