Removing hide from antlers

Recommended Posts

I have a few sets of old antlers laying around that still have the hair and skin on them. All are 10+ years from being removed from the head of the deer and it's almost impossible to remove. Obviously it's much easier to get that skin off right away after cutting them off but we are well past that point. I would like to put them on a piece of wood rather than have them in a box under the workbench. Has anyone found an easier way than pliers and side cutters?

Soak them in warm water for a few hours or over night.

Put them in a plastic tub with water for a few days.  Get a large flathead screwdriver that you can tap on with a hammer.  After a day of soaking, work the hide loose by tapping the screw driver between the hide and bone.  Once you tap in , use the screwdriver to leverage the hide off the bone. Use a knife to cut the big loose pieces off.  A pliers will help at times. Do what you can each day.

Once all the hide is off boil the skull plats and scrape them with a knife to remove the membranes that will attract bugs if just left on the bone..
