10.3.16 Sunset Lodge Fishing Report, nw Angle of low

2 posts in this topic

Hello everyone! Checking back in with you from Sunset Lodge on beautiful Oak Island here in the Northwest Angle on world famous Lake of the Woods. Hope you all had a fantastic week!

Here in the Angle, Autumn is in full swing, as the temps are dropping, leaves are changing into their bright fall colors and  the local wildlife is preparing for winter. The weather the last week has been a mix of clouds and sun, rain and high winds along with falling temperatures. Fall fishing can be some of the best and easiest of the season, as the fish start to put on the feed bags in the big push towards winter freeze up.

On the American side of the lake, the water temp is between 60 and 62 degrees and falling as the air temps continue to drop. Anglers have been catching a mix of walleyes and saugers in the waters between Oak and Flag Island. Drifting bottom bouncers with minnows and spinners in depths of 18 to 30 feet has been effective as well as jigging with a minnow and trolling crankbaits. Hot colors are gold, pink and orange. Also, look to the deeper holes and mud areas here on the Minnesota side.

In Ontario waters, fishing has really been heating up despite the falling temps for a variety of species! Walleyes and saugers have been red hot as they begin to stack up in the deep holes and current areas as they prey on baitfish and bulk up for winter. Check the areas of Outer Bay, Bishop Bay, Johnston Passage and Tranquil Channel. Use electronics to locate schools of fish and work a jig and minnow combo to put fish in the boat. Use bottom bouncers with spinners and minnows to cover water and locate scattered fish. Crappie action has been picking up as of late as the water temps continue to dip, look for sharp drop offs into deep water of 30 feet or more and areas of trees and flooded timber. Work a jig with a minnow or plastic to put these jumbo slabs in the box. We've had several fish coming in topping 15 inches! Fall is also a time when the muskie action can be top notch! Most muskie anglers have switched from casting baits to trolling large minnow baits such as Jakes, Grandmas and Believers to locate these active predators. This time of year, these giants are at their largest as they are feeding heavily on suckers and tulibees. Fall is definitely the best time to land a true giant!

With September coming to a close and October on the horizon, time is running out on the open water season. But there's still time to make one last dash to the Angle for some world class fishing and hunting! This last weekend, the Minnesota Waterfowl season kicked off and there have been plenty of ducks around to put a smile on any wingshooters face! Maybe a weekend cast and blast would be a nice way to cap off the fall? We would love to be your hosts for that next outdoor excursion on your calendar.

Until next week folks, take care!
Cale Albers

How big is the bloody musky?   Sort of sad to see all those dead fish pictures of big pike and a musky.

    • I think last year was probably the best/first year we should have gone for it at the deadline so no regrets on that one. We got Pommers at the deadline as well but he had some years left and we were able to resign him and overall he has produced for us so no biggy there either. I'm sure we all wish we could take back the Matt Moulson trade back, that was the only bad one that cost us a couple of 2nd rounders and he looked terrible, but again hindsight is always 20/20. The rest were all minor deals that didn't do much either way.    Someone will get moved at some point, we just can't fill out a team and or sign Grandlund & Nino without it, at least not that I can see. Sounds like we had a deal for the Canadians first but their guy was there so they kept the pick, no problem with Fletcher being patient on the trade front, might have to wait until some teams don't fill their needs via free agency before a move happens.

    • anyone else have any issues with ChartInstaller? I last used it on my laptop a month or so ago and it worked fine. I am getting ready to go to North Dakota for a couple days and wanted to download some areas to my card that I hadn't before.   I removed the sd card from my Hummingbird Helix and put it in the laptop. Opened the CharInstaller program that was already installed and was prompted to update. I downloaded the new Chart Installer.exe file and no matter how many times I download it, reboot and retry install etc it will not install. I just get an error "There has been an error. Unknown Error upacking file C:/Program Files (x86)/Chart Installer/nwjc.exe   So while doing the upgrade I lost my desktop icon with no software to update my chart. I understand there is a 1 year subscription but I just got my navionics+ and put it on this card last October.   Any ideas?
    • Gotta let youse guys carry on wid something!!!
    • so why did you say it then!!!!
    • IDK, I am kinda liking this show more and more. Its much better than the first season. Yeah, Madison has her quirks, but there are some interesting characters and this whole conflict with the indigenous people now is intriguing.
    • DOILIES. Those thing on yer man-cave table tops. So that's a pic of DOLLY, huh? Smurf 's ol' gal friend....or yers?
    • The first piece that Golden State might be losing is Andre Iguadala. Would love to see the wolves grab him.
    •   Sure anytime. But, it kind of sounded above you were over Dollies?  Or was that Dolly's?
    • With all the moist and cool weather, the slugs are having a feast on our garden plants.  My wife asked me to look over some plants that the insects were destroying.  Upon inspection, this is what we found - slugs.  The vegetables treated with slug bait were fine.  It was the flowers, asters, marigolds, pole beans, etc. that were untreated and weakened by some hail were experiencing a slow death.  Check this photo out of the slugs.  These were white like extra large maggots.  They are all treated and coming back strong.
