Not sure where to post this so obviously feel free to move it if there is a more appropriate location.

Overall I have gotten used to the new forums and am liking it but a couple things really urinate me off.

1.) Why can't we edit our posts indefinitely. It seems like after a few minutes you can no longer edit them. Sometimes you notice a spelling typo or grammar error that you would like to fix later on. Can this be changed?

2.) What's up with this post merging "feature"? I can't stand it. Many times you want posts to be separate, especially  when responding to different previous posts. Is there perhaps some setting to turn this off/on based on an individuals preference?

I can't be the only one frustrated by these things.

I believe you can edit up to 30 minutes later. It is to prevent users from changing context after replies have been made

Hopefully we can get @Rick to chime on your 2nd question

Why prevent that?

Editing after a reply could take the reply completely out of context.

I'm sure editing is locked down due mainly to debates and arguments in silly town and a few other areas on HSO.  For some reason people will either post something in anger and then go back and edit it later or they wait for people to reply to their post and then go back and change it to alter the meaning and context..  I haven't personally seen it happen but I'm sure it does occasionally.  I know the practice of locking down editing after a short period is becoming more common practice on other forums I've used.  Generally it seems like users dislike the practice but since some people can't play nicely its become more necessary.

Your best bet is to proof read before you hit submit and make sure you aren't saying anything that you may later regret and want to retract.

As far as combining multiple posts into one it is a little annoying if you are trying to replay to 2 separate posts back to back.  Sometimes the 2 posts aren't directly related to each other as more than one subtopic could be going on with in the same thread.  However, it still does work people just have to be more careful about reading the posts to see who has been quoted and who the person is replying to.  I'm sure it does cause some confusion but hasn't seem to be a huge issue.

I understand the no editing after a reply thing but the post merging sucks!

Good explanations on the editing question already. The posts merging only go for a short period and is standard with the software. No ability to change we can find. Sorry.

If folks are concerned about posts being merged, they could just start the second post with a line with something like ...

----------------------------NEW POST------------------------------------

And then readers could figure it out.

----------------------------New Posting-----------------------

See, like this.

Is that sarcasm?  It is so hard to tell.  I don't know what the time window for merging is, you could just wait.

See there are two solutions!

I like to just limit myself to one thought a day.  Then no merging and I don't overtax my brain.

Ayup.  Number two merge solution:  x=y + xz sq.~ > y-x; therefore xzy:sq +1= ham on rye.

This must be a Union post with all the merging and indecision and Rebelss's math!:D

Question for Rebelss?  Is that apple or Hickory smoked ham on rye, because it would make a difference in the equation.

    •   Sounds like the House of Reps. who pulled their AHCA (Ryan/Trump  Care) so when their fellow Rep. voted it down every one would know who was against or for it. Now none of them have to explain how they voted, the same as how some on here weasel out of explaining their statements, by reverting to name calling.
    • caught my first fish with a lamprey on it and also got a 35 inch pike on a salamander.

    •   Bafflegab! Hot darn! I like that! Is that like my psychobabble, aka Mayospeak , or to quote Thurber, Pussgrapple or even Cussgravy? I haveta remember that!  "Bafflegab found in this one"?! Go look on the health thread, where yer buddy juicedup gets yammering away at you! ! Now THERE's some  real balderdash and twaddle! Yes, some good, informative threads used to exist here! Once in awhile, you can even run across one! Gotta look hard!
    • The bite was on last week. With 4 guys we caught over 700 fish in 3.5 days.  And I don't care if anyone believes me or not.  Actually 700 is probably a conservative estimate because we had to have averaged at least 50 fish per person per day and it was probably much more than that.  Yes some of them were 10" saugers but there were many 16 to 20"+ walleye and the crappie size was the nicest I've seen in 4 years with no keepers under 12" and several 13-14" with 2 at 15.25".  All of the pavement pounding and scouting this winter and last week really paid off on this trip!  This is the most hardcore group of guys I fish with and they really know how to put the smackdown on these fish.
    •   If you guys need fishing advice just ask. I've never had a problem sharing.
    • Any time I have ever tried that it creates havoc with the sonar until it floats back up the hole and is removed but if anyone has a fix for this let me know.
    • Nonetheless there are some forums here which actually have active informative discussions without all of the bafflegab found in this one.
    • Great pictures by all that have shared thus far!    Three of my best or my favorites anyway...
    • I was out and about wetland areas this weekend and saw lots of waterfowl.  Many trumpeter swans, high flying tundra swans, gadwalls, shovelers, a few wood ducks, ring necks, hooded mergansers, , a pair of goldeneyes, and a loon.  I also saw many sandhill cranes.
