Popular Post 123fish
Here's my story. After my miss on Thursday I probably put on 70 miles trying to find another tom. The last place I checked had a tom and hen track where they had walked down the gravel road that morning. That was promising as the spot is just a few trees along a 25 ft. wide creek. I knew that if he stayed there he would hear me calling no matter where he roosted. The next day I didn't go there but went to my opening day spot and heard and saw nothing. Saturday I went to where I saw the track and set up in the dark. Had a hen and non strutting jake set up for decoys. He only gobbled once on the roost when a mallard hen started quacking loudly and he shock gobbled. He was a couple of hundred yards straight east of me. He came out of the tree before legal and was on the opposite side of the creek from me. dump! He gobbled like crazy on the ground and was answering my every call on the box call. I don't know if the hen was with him or not as I could not see either one. After about an hour he was still gobbling in the same spot. I called on the box and set it down. I was sitting there when I thought I heard wing beats. I looked over there and he pops out of the willows. Called him across the creek! Couldn't believe it. He is strutting the whole time as he VERY slowly makes his way across the recently burned switchgrass patch. Probaby took him a half hour to come 200 yards. He would gobble every time I called on the box. He gets about 50 yards away and stops. He is strutting and gobbling but would not come an inch closer. After missing the other day at 35 yards I didn't even consider a 50 yarder. All of a sudden he goes out of strut turns away from me and he is leaving no doubt about it. I quickly reached into my call bag and pulled out the Power Crystal and made a few purrs and a couple of clucks and he stops, looks over at me, gobbles and goes back into strut. Read about doing that once and had it work on a hung up gobbler in Nebraska for a buddy of mine that I was calling for a number of years back. Anyway he stays away from the jake decoy but is coming on over to check the hen out. I'm keeping my composure and when he is at 27 yards I let him have it. He falls forward and doesn't move or even twitch. His head is still up though and I keep him covered in case something bad happens. Within five seconds he lowers his head and that's it. I was on a WPA and had to use some Hevishot that I borrowed from my cousin. I was shocked how hard that stuff hit and how crappy it patterned. He had a shattered thigh bone, a broken wing, three pellets that had went through his vitals and went straight through him. I don't think there was a pellet in his head or neck. I never patterned the stuff because I thought there was a very good chance I would never fire a shell to start with or ever again on a WPA. I'm guessing maybe that's what wanderer meant when he said I should pattern the stuff and I might be surprised. 22lbs. and doubled bearded so that was pretty cool. Felt better about the miss on Thursday when it was all said and done. I will try to call a bird in for my buddy next week when he comes to hunt. Good luck to everybody still hunting especially Team One! x1957x, PFUNK, Archerysniper and 2 others

Cooter
Nice job guys! Good and bad news, saw a group of 3 dandies today along with a couple other respectable toms, all with henslocked in strut. They are there, just need to find one alone or drag a hen by, wind was horrible today.

Any pics I post are through the help of the wife. I'll bet there are a bunch of guys on here that can help you though.

When posting in the submission forum with your phone, you will see an option to choose files to attach. Click it. Depending on the cell phone you will locate where the pictures are stored(gallery, camera, etc). Select them and upload. You will need to click the "+" symbol on the picture once it's uploaded to put into your post wherever your curser is located int eh text box. Depending on how the picture was taken they may be flipped but they will be there.
