Extremely reliable?????  Pshaw.  We had a 68 bug bought new.  Engine blew at 40k as was typical in California.  #3 cylinder had oil cooler in path of coolling fan and dropped the head of the exhaust valve.  I still have the piston.   But parts and my time were cheap.  Set the timing with a transistor radio.  "How to keep your Volkswagen alive a manual for the complete one-who-thinks-I-am-silly was my bible.  I could do the valve adjustment in about 20 minutes. 

Finally turned into a pile of rust.  By Bye. 

Wife used to wonder why the other women in the grocery store weren't wearing snowmobile suits.

Ya gotta admit del they were pretty simple and easy on fuel. I mean, when it went from $.29 to $.65 a gallon, that meant something. But I agree, they were frigid in the winter. A friend had a VW squareback and it was like a freezer riding in there. The heat tunnels were all rotted out so nothing made it to the front from the back. He always liked riding in my '74 Gremlin. Sucked w/o snow tires but it sure had a great heater in it.

They were junk basically.  An 1939 design.  The heat was from the exhaust passing up through a big chunk of cast iron.  Might get a little after driving for 45 minutes.  But they were pretty easy to work on, which is a good thing.  Drive with one hand and scrape the windshield with the other.     Made a falcon look sophisticated.   Got passed by semi trucks going up the hills driving from MN to California.

Bought a brand new  lime green "Love Bug" in '74. (my very first new car)  What a piece of dump. After one winter freezing in it, and not even being able to defrost the windows, I traded it in on a new Pinto. I LOVED that Pinto. Great little car.

You just need to know how to maintain yer bug!......After about a week from new, the heater cables stretch and you have to adjust them, all three of ours  get extremely hot....Yup, gotta tune heater cables. Been driving that 62 every day for 5 years summer and winter and only one issue....Popped a motor at 95k, but that motor is 15 minutes to replace and had another Id just finished rebuilding for my 59........And thats a whopping $200 to rebuild........And the check engine light never came on!......;)

With over 21 million of the Type 1 Beetles produced worldwide, VW must've done something right. If I recall, they had front disc brakes which didn't show up in the US models until the '63 Avanti. Studebaker actually had the opportunity to become the North American VW distributor not once but actually three times. Once in the early postwar, once in the mid-50's and once after operations moved to Canada. The front office nixed the idea the first two times even though some were advocating it. Canadian Parliament disallowed it in the mid-60's as it would've meant Volkswagen could've been imported duty free had they used Studebaker as a front. Stude also dropped the ball on getting the Toyota or Nissan distributorship in the mid-60's to go along with their numerous other management blunders. 

Always like seeing cars from that era, Bugs included. Saw a Ford Maverick delivering pizza in the Stadium Village area last weekend. Hadn't seen one in years. Roomate had one. Wanted to get rid of it because it wasn't a chick magnet. Parents bought him a Ford Fiesta instead. Boy that helped. Blast from the past. Keep 'em coming!

Nothing could stop the belly pan from dissolving into rust.  I used to have to put a piece of plywood on the floor jack to jack it up. 

And this is what happens when the #3 exhaust valve lets go at 60mph on us101, north of King City.

Fortunately, the valve head got wedged and didn't get down into the crankcase. (where it could have done some extra damage.)

I found an old COE beer truck about a year ago and I wanted so badly to bring it home, return it to it's former glory but I would build a small bar inside the refer, all period correct of course. I think it would be a hoot down at back to the fifties and other shows.

Ya I have a soft spot for old trucks meself. Being a Studebaker guy, my little fat buddy from Bemidji tried to get me to bite on this "gem" that his brother had recently acquired. He suggested I look at it as a hunting and fishing opportunity or to take to Back to the Fifties. Probably so he could crash in it. Now, granted the metal looks pretty straight and I have experience riding the short bus but no desire at this point to take on any more "projects".

Walked down to see the Italian car get together.  Mostly Alfas, and one Ferrari, with a driver in full Ferrari regalia right down to the shoes...  and a couple of outliers.

I can remember tooling around with my cousin in his early 60's bright red Fiat Spider. He had a reverb system in it, which I thought was so cool, and remember hearing TJ's "Crimson and clover" play with that echo effect from it....far out, man! He had other than the 90 HP engine in it too, I don't remember what he said, because that little sucker would fry the tires off and fly. Got my Dad PO'd because he left rubber all over the street in front of our house. 

 

Anyone remember these? '72 Detomaso Pantera. The neighbor owned the Mercury dealership, and had one of these for a while. He invited me down to see it, and go for a ride. I had just finished taking a year photography courses in my senior year at the Vo-tech, and did a photo shoot of it for him.

Didn't hurt my Mom had just bought a brand new Cougar XR7 from him, either.
