Fall Trolling After Dark

Mons

Recommended Posts

I'll be spending some time this week on a northwest metro lake with a pretty good walleye population and I would like to try trolling after dark. The lake is very clear and has fairly steep shorelines that are lined with weeds. In the summer time the outside weedline is at about 16 feet. My question at what depth should I be fishing? How fast should I go? Any favorite crankbaits or stickbaits?

Thanks for any help.

Tough to say, really. Outside weedlines can be dynamite. So can inside weedlines. So can sand flats with scattered weeds. My advice would be to try lots of stuff until the fish tell you what they want. And if you do catch one, don't troll too far before turning around and running back through the area.

We used to do quite a bit of this when I was younger and more fired up. Keep in mind this up north in Otter Tail county. We'd troll in 5-6 feet of water with big, like #13 floating rapalas. Usually, black and silver, perch, or for some strange reason, rainbow trout colors. The odd thing was that we had to be using the big motor when doing this. Don't know why, but we caught nothing when using the trolling motor.
