Mushroom Explosion!!

Not much of a gardener or yard guy. Why did we wake up to dozens and dozens of mushrooms in our lake front yard this morning? I mean virtually overnight. Could we prevent them? Will they create a long term problem? Where? What? Why? LOL

Sorry I didn't see this one earlier.

I suppose, short of using a LOT of fungicide and spreading it over acres and acres, you're not going to get rid of the fungus, which is actually doing you some good. The body of the mushroom is only the fruiting part of the organism, like the apple on an apple tree. The organism itself can be quite large (the largest organism on earth is a fungus, doncha know?)

The 'shrooms are almost certainly harmless if they came up that quickly and were growing out of the grass. There are a few grass-loving saprobes that are will give you a belly ache and Human Faucet Syndrome, but they'll only hurt you if you eat them. (I suppose it's too late, but if you've got a pic, it'd be fun to see if we can figure out what it is....but probably too late at this point.)

There's a decent chance you had an edible pop up in the yard. If so, eat away (unless you use lots of chemicals on the lawn)!!!

Are they in circles? If so,they are called fairy rings.

Yep, a circle of mushrooms is called a fairy ring. There's a type of mushroom called the "fairy ring mushroom" because it so often grows in fairy rings, but LOTS of mushrooms also grow this way, so more sleuthing is required to figure out what they are.

If they ARE the real "fairy ring mushrooms," you've got a very tasty treat in your yard. Google "marasmius oreades" if you want to see if that's the specific genus and species you've got.

What's the difference if mushrooms are in the lawn, especially at this time of the year with a decent amount of rain? I really can't see much sense in treating it with chemicals and killing off the good natural things that happen in healthy soil.

Yep, getting someone who knows what's what is probably the safest and quickest way to learn, but it's not the only way. There are also plenty of forays through the Minnesota Mycological Society (and quite a few of them are in your neck of the woods, Del) that are really, really helpful, as they'll probably have an expert there who can identify pretty much everything that's found.

If you're going to go it alone, there are some edibles that are quite tricky to tell apart from the poisonous ones; those take a lot of time and experience and caution.

There are also some others that are pretty darn easy to figure out. A bit of reading, a few pictures, a couple of questions in the mushroom forum, and you'd be on your way. You can google the "Foolproof Four" to get started on the easy ones.

Hello guys, Nice discussion going on Mushroom Explosion.  Shiitake mushroom has the effects of preventing and curing cancer, raising immunity, defending senescence and prolonging life, reducing blood fat, treating high blood pressure, lowering cholesterol. It is used medically for many diseases involving diabetes, tuberculosis, infectious hepatitis, neuritis. Some agricultural companies like agrinoon.com/agriculture are especially known for catering the best Mushroom Logs for Sale. Thanks. Continue discussion.

Hey Delun Kang long time no hear.

How are things going at the Agrinoon Mushroom company you sell for? Not sure if you read the date but this is a pretty old post from 2013. Also, this internet site is mainly for Minnesota-USA which the weather has been as cold as -20 below in the last week or two so not a whole lot of mushroom growing going on right now.  Good luck with the sales! ;)
