Stcloudangler
3/8", or an easy way to do it is to take cutoff pieces from your baseboard and use the thick end as a "shim" to prop it up.
Bobby Bass
Why such the hurry? I would install the trim after the carpet has been laid. This way you let the installer install the tack strips close to the wall and won't have to worry about getting your trim dinged. Also if you any waving in your floor and install the trim first you might see gaps (hi/low spots) where the carpet does not cover. When you install your trim you can make adjustments to hide that. traveler
Nope, trim first. If your installer puts the tack strip close to the wall and you put the base on after, you'll need to remove the trim to get the carpet out...not what you want to do. Or even if you can get the carpet out, the strip will be under the base and make any subsequent installs a problem. An installer useing good technique won't mar your new base to any degree that a rag with a little stain won't take care of, if thats even needed. Not to mention it's a whole lot easier to install the trim when you can have the saw in the room cutting material. 3/8 to 1/2 inch off the floor is good. If you're getting a low profine carpet (berber, commercial, or glued down) go with 3/8, otherwise for plushes 1/2 is fine.If you an uneven floor, use the 1/2 inch as the highest...if you have less than that in a few areas to keep the base looking level thats OK. Nhamm
+2. There are some installers that won't install without baseboard. It is a requirement with good reason to have something to tuck and hold the carpet underneath is vital for some types of carpet.
