Dave S
Just curious if anyone else is tired of listening to the constant hollering anytime someone makes a shot, whether it's a drive or a put the Happy Gilmore crowd always seems to show up in full force. Not sure how the Pros can stand to have these people on the course, whether they're yelling "IT'S IN THE HOLE" or any other incoherent banter.I like to watch the tournaments on the weekends but this IMO ruins it. CANOPY SAM
"Mashed Potatoes"? What does that mean, other than mashed potatoes?I personally couldn't agree with you more, LEP7MM. I wonder if the introduction of such a young, dynamic player, Tiger Woods, has anything to do with a younger, more boisterous gallery?Golf has been, and always will be, a gentleman's game. The vast majority of today's player's continue to support this mentality, and you can see their frustration when the gallery is shooting phone pics, murmuring before a shot, etc.I truly believe the caliber of play, heightened competition, and the size of the "winnings" purse have amped up the anxiety and ambiance of each event today, but the redneck shouting from the gallery should be shot down immediately, and the offenders should be expeditiously escorted off the course. This isn't the WWF Monday Night Raw. It's a far more refined sport, and it should stay that way. IMHO.
Dave S
Canopy Sam, very well put. My thoughts exactly. I've heard the mashed potatoes hollered as well as pepperoni pizza. A few weeks back, I watched as the crowd surrounded one of the guys in a bunker. I mean literally a dozen or more people surrounding him within 6-8 feet away while he was trying to hit. IMO mobody should be allowed in close proximity while these guys are playing.
CANOPY SAM
I'm always amazed how close the course judges allow the crowds to get to the players, particularly on the tee box. These guys freakin' crush a ball! If they were to accidentally shank or hook a ball hard into the crowd at point blank range (like I too often do thank goodness no one is watching) someone could literally be killed. I've never attended a professional game, but if I ever do there's no way on God's green earth that I'm going to stand 8 feet off to the side of Tiger Woods driving a ball. I was even telling my wife last weekend, while watching a game on TV, how much pressure must be added to these guys while driving a ball thru a crowd of people allowing only 10-20 yards for the ball to travel. I wonder how much better they'd play without all the added pressure of the huge crowds?
bbfenatic
It has gotten out of hand with the Phoenix bunch on that par 3 and gone forward from there IMO. Remember the guy with Blue Fro who used to just carry a John 3:16 Sign and stand beind players to get on camera...and many thought that was obnoxious....but at least he was silent. It is just going to get worse with the diff sayings they shout until they crack down and start policing, escorting people off the course who are over the top IMO. 10,000 Casts
I agree and I hate all the comments too. the other thing that I find stupid is when the people run after a ball in the rough and stand right over the top of it so they can be the closest one to see the next shot. Some people seriously act like morons at these tournaments. I wonder if the Beer tents have anything to do with it....
schmitty3
I always laugh when people run after the ball. They run right on top of it, then when they get there it's like ok now what are ya gonna do? It's a dam golf ball, have you never seen one? Tiger is really the only one that has to deal with all this consistently though. Whenever he hits a wayward shot he is hitting a low punch shot through an ally of the gallery's heads. Some of those people are nuts, the ball goes right over their heads. They show some other groups on Thursday and Friday and there is literally like 10 people on the entire hole watching them. I don't get why they don't just kick out the idiots that scream stuff right after the ball is hit. Just throw them out of there and it will stop. As far as 16 in Phoenix I would have to disagree. That hole is awesome! I was there last year and had a blast. Most of the players loved it too, they know what to expect at it, and most of them love it. It brings some excitement to the sport, and also attracts a new audience.
bbfenatic
Not saying 16 at Phoenix is not fun and I know players like it....but it carries forward to other tourneys and now they think it is "always fun to make a scene" at all tourneys and IMO it takes away from the sport....but who knows...in today's "video game", "in your face", "louder the better" world maybe the powers to be think it makes the sport better and if so..."I'm happy for you!". MontanaMax
In honor of HSO and Silly Town, you have all inspired me to yell "FISH ON" after putt strokes at the Masters next week!
picksbigwagon
After watching the John Deere last year, the "In the hole" crowd and "You da man" dolts, need to be slapped upside the head. I think it started with John Daly and has exploded from there. Followed Daly last year at the Deere, for two days and the crowd was borderline obnoxious, he ignores it well, but the comments from the "sophisticated spectators" towards John's pants or he looks and side comments from men and women when his girlfriend walked was just as obscene...... My observation was the people hired to control he crowds have no idea what they are doing, most wear it as a badge of jonor, but simply have absolutely no idea what they are doing
CANOPY SAM
Yep PBW. I think holding up the sign that says Quiet Please has kind of lost it's power. They really need to start hitting people with it! Hard!
Dave S
Shameful coming to this from what the game USED to be. Crowd control is terrible. I've often commented to the wife about how close people have to be to the tee box when they're T'ing off. When I'm into my swing, I'd pity the poor fool who got in the way. If a ball can go through a sheet of plywood, I don't want to imagine what would happen to someone's skull.
