Randy Moss proclaims himself the greatest receiver of all time

Moss was great to watch, and made everyone think Culpepper was an ACTUAL quarterback....

Rice didn't have that issue... his qb's were typically legit NFL caliber players.

Moss's antics were entertaining to me, still are. Though, this latest video isn't as funny. It's more awkward than anything.

Medophorically is what "best ever" numbers ment. I did not say he has THE best ever numbers. +1 on the Emmit Smith remark, not even in my top 5. Maybe 9 or 10. Product of the system and O-Line. And same could be argued about Rice and that system. No doubt he ran the cleanest routes ever though.

If he is the greatest how can we explain him being cut, traded and basically run off teams. Seems to me the all time greatest player at his position would be prime merchandise and kept at a by a team forever. (or at least until his big time yrs are over ala Rice, Montana, Unitas etc).

I think he is the best. He changed the way a defense covers WR's. Rice had Montana and Young his entire career. Moss had Brady for a few seasons. Culpepper was good for a couple of seasons and Cunningham had 1 good year. Rice had a good QB for a majority of his career. Just my opinion...

I would agree. I think most people would also agree that Moss WAS the most "talented" receiver to ever play the game. Talent only goes so far though. There have been extremely talented guys in every sport where you just sit back and go....wow, but because of character issues and motivational issues they do themselves a huge disservice both socially and also professionally.

He was more physically gifted that Rice was and if he were to have been put on the right team for as long as Rice did there is no reason to believe he would have broken all the records. He was dealt a bad hand in that Red McCombs decided to have a fire sale and dump his contract right before he sold the team and sent him to the Raiders. His attitude and maturity is where he really loses ground to Rice. But then again Rice was given a great set of owners and coaches and he had a heck of a team around him to compliment his talents.

I have no problem with what Randy said. Right up till 1998 I had never seen a WR do things that Rice was able to do. When 1998 rolled around we saw Randy do some things on the field that more than likely made Rice shake his head in amazement because there is no way on gods green earth that Rice could have dominated the game like Moss did when he came on the scene. The speed, the hands, the ability to go up and take the ball away from more than one defender and make it look effortless.

What deep threat was better?

Yeah, he took plays off but really who could be expected to run 50-70 sixty yard dashes a game? And part of that was lulling the defender to sleep, setting them up to blow by them at some point.

One thing I will say is he did seem to disappear in the biggest games. He could have and should have had a big play in the second half of the 98 NFCCG but didn't . He was all but invisible during 41-0 and in the SB with the pats he didn't step up and put the game away when he had the chance. That even more than his attitude is the thing that I think holds him back in the conversation because in the biggest games Jerry did show up.

Moss is the greatest deep threat ever that's an easy one. Best receiver ever? Depends who you ask. Rice would run every route and had unmatched work ethic and Moss was just a freak of nature.

I'd love to see their careers reversed and see what the stats would be. Moss playing most his career on a dynasty 49er team with QB's like Montana and Young and excellent coaching. While Rice plays for the Vikings for most his career with QB's like Cunningham, Culpepper, and Johnson with mediocre coaching.

I hope Moss gets a ring this weekend, I'll always remember that guy shredding d-backs like they were going out of style. When the QB dropped back and you seen the wind up you knew it was gonna be a bomb to Randy and more then likely he'll be catching it no matter who or how many guys were on him. Blazing speed, monster vertical, one hand catches, no look catches, stopping on a dime, uncanny footwork to keep the feet in bounds. Good times

I like both guys though and have always like the 49ers since back in the day. I'm going for the 49ers, but I wouldn't be mad to see Ed Reed get himself a ring.

thats it really...the guy was just awesome to watch. Best ever? That can be argued. But most talented HAS to go to him, hands down.

The "Beset Ever" would have lead the NFL in receptions or rec. yards for at least 1 season don't you think???? I would say Moss was the most talented but not best ever. Saying this as a huge Vikings and Moss fan too. You Packer fans are just as prejudiced for your team too. Hutson? really? IALTO He has 1/3 the receiving yards that Rice does.

He's so lucky he did his driving the wrong way up the one way with that every blue moon cigarette/thing in the ash tray, he was cheeched, that's why he was freaked out headin the wrong way, if he did that today he'd be really get lit up on twitter or espn, etc. Just re-read that post lit up that is Randy Moss. Just think how great he could've been and how much faster his feet would've moved if he laid off the hippie cabbage.

During my competetive running days I saw a lot of evidence that shows the hippie cabbage doesn't do anything to slow you down. If anything the evidence that I saw would say the exact opposite. I know several state and national champions that would blaze up before practice and sometimes races.

One guy smoked before every practice for a year and had the best season of his life and went undefeatd until late in the season. The next season he quit the hippie cabbage thinking it would only help him run faster, that year he put in the same amount of work and ran against similiar competition but for some reason he couldn't even qualify for finals any more. Only difference any of us could find between his best year ever and his worst year ever was that he quit the hippie cabbage.

It was a different era, a lot less sophisticated and a lot less passing but he is shurely in the conversation. Note, he played d, kicked and led or was near the top the NFL in some stats just about every yr. And was a 2 time MVP.

I was really kidding nofish, look how fast basketball players are and that is hippie salad central from community college hoops to the big show. So hippie green you're saying is a performance enhancing drug ? And these athletes are fathering kids like mad, Nate Newton Bam Morris etc liked large volumes of it and Nater got busted twice. Just kidding really, Moss no doubt an excellent receiver, will he be fitted for a ring or will the football gods give the bounces of the game to Baltimore and Birk/McKinnie ?

You are compairing athletic ability over a span of 60 years, if todays average professional athlete were to go back in time it would be pretty scary how much they dominate. Today, Don Hutson wouldnt even make a practice squad. How can you say best ever? He is not even remotely close to this conversation, give me a break. There werent even players of color back in those days.

I can't believe that people actually think Moss was better than Rice. Moss had a few good years and that was it! Like people said before he probably is the greastest deep threat receiver of all time but not best receiver of all time. Rice was just all around great. Route runner, smart football player, and class act. Jerry Rice stands alone at the top!

What this has all proven to me is that Moss is a genius. He knows he wasn't the greatest ever. But look at how much national conversation he's created. Much of it about himself, which of course is what motivates #18/84.

Reminds me of the "straight cash homey", the greatest mooning ever, and all of the pouting he did.
