Building my first spear

Haha I thought that after I typed it over break that just saying "decoy" may be to vague for this forum lol. They are old duck decoys, there's some cool dog bone type weights I'm going to keep but I have a pile of old strap and mushroom weights off his old duck decoys.

I re-weighted a spear for a guy and this is the end result.

I tried to talk him out of it because this wasa forged spear but he did'nt care he wanted more weight on it so I tried to keep it as close to original as possible. sorry for the poor picture quality

I would have tried to talk him out of it also gordie but sometimes its just all about functionality. I have a friend who wants to start forging spears and tongs.

I have my center weight molded out of clay/ body filler and I have a mixture of sand, powdered clay, and water that seems to have the right consistency for doing sand castings, hopefully tomorrow after work I'll have a chance to try casting the center weight. Pictures to follow.

Hey Dooley

Can you tell me how you were able to bend the tines so uniform? Some kind of bending machine? I do some welding but nothing that looks this good. Thanks.

I tacked different size pipe on a table then tacked a plate next to the pipe to hold the round stock and I simply rolled it around.

I made my mold finally but forgot to grab my lead lol here's the progress

I test poured one before I did it on the spear to make sure I had enough lead and everything worked

WOW

That looks great Dooley

Now comes the fun part getting to use it and when the first pike is speared you should be very pround of yourself for building that handmade spear, and it is a tool that is a work of art.

Good luck

Have you weighed the spear Dooley?

It's actually not as heavy as I thought, I weighed it on the bathroom scale and it was around 8 lbs then I weighed myself then weighed myself holding the spear and it was about an 8 lb difference.
