I am looking to purchase a new deep cycle trolling battery. I have a Minnkota 812 Auto-pilot.. We use it mainly to steer our boat when trolling. Is this new advancement worth the extra money? I normaly replace my trolling battery each (875 CCA from Excide)? How long will these new generation batteries last? I have been looking at the Optima and Minnkota batteries.

The new batteries are designed to last several times longer than flooded acid batteries. But they are more apt to be damaged by chargers that put out too high or low voltage. So if you are going with the new batteries invest in a good programable charger too.
