Holiday Weekends Suck

6 posts in this topic

So, remembering back to Memorial Day weekend, fishing was horrible for me. I couldn't do anything to catch a fish, no matter what presentation, what bait, where I was, etc... Then on my way back from the lake, my driver's side hub goes out about 5 miles from home and I spend Memorial Day fixing that. Fast forward to labor day weekend. Again, I was having one hell of a time getting fish, varying presentations, baits and the whole gammet. Then as I pull home last night, my passanger side trailer tire blows. Atleast it is just the tire and not the hub again, but still frustrating. I do have some fish to cook for the kids today thank goodness, but Holiday weekends just don't seem to agree with me. Just needed to vent a little bit.

I'm in the same boat with you. I only seem to have problems on holiday weekends. Memorial weekend 2 years ago I was driving home from cass lake...get all the way down to minneapolis and I blow a tire on the trailer. Doesn't seem like a big deal until I find out the tire iron in my truck doesn't fit the lug nuts on the trailer. Call my buddy to bring some tools. Get the tire fixed, you'd think everything is ok. NOPE! The alternator on my truck decides to die on me. So my buddy has to drive home to get his truck, drives back and we tow the boat first. Come back and tow my truck...drive through a construction zone (down to 1 lane) and the tow strap breaks. Not so bad for me as it is for the million cars behind me. And yes, the fishing sucked that weekend. I had actually left a day early because of the fishing, which was a good thing because if my alternator died up there I'd really have been screwed. eek Overall the whole ordeal took about 6 hours.

Fishing was not great for me but I did not let it wreck my weekend. It was beautiful on the lake. I did not have any car/boat trouble.

the kids drove me nuts.

Gotta love 'em though. They are what kids are supposed to be.

Mmmmm, trolling on a September full moon on a clear sky with zero wind. Walleyes were very willing. Fantastic weekend weather wise.

But I had my 1 year old Minnkota PowerDrive AP die on me, so that was my one bit of frustration. I was a little upset because it's one year and 3 weeks old. Thought Minnkota's had a one year warranty, but was pleasantly surprised to find out it's two years. So I get it fixed for free and hopefully be back out in two weeks with it.

Wow sounds like you guys had some neat "adventures" nothing wrong with that. At least ya got on the lake, I split wood! Its ok not a fan of going out during holiday weekends, always good to get work done, let people close up their cabins for winter over labor weekend then hit the water a few weeks later.

    • Great pictures by all that have shared thus far!    Three of my best or my favorites anyway...
    • I was out and about wetland areas this weekend and saw lots of waterfowl.  Many trumpeter swans, high flying tundra swans, gadwalls, shovelers, a few wood ducks, ring necks, hooded mergansers, , a pair of goldeneyes, and a loon.  I also saw many sandhill cranes.
    • Volume wise it cuts the same as any othe 8" auger.  Does the Nils make finer chips than others?   I never saw the issue the few times I used mine.  Can you reverse the drill and push the slush down the hole.?
    • Sorry, but Ive had enough of the indepedent/liberturd fence sitter crowd pissing down their righteousness on reality.
    •   Makes no difference what place we are in or that Stall has scored 2 goals in the last 5 games (you call that bunches?).....who would not want to play the Wild in the first round at this point?  This is absolutley shocking to me....they appear to me like a ship without a Captain....7 games left to figure it out.
    •   I go fishing here whenever I need a laugh.  They are always biting.......well the big fat Sucker Fish anyway.
    • i have seen more useless products succeed, but I can't see a practical use for this thing. I do agree with the icing aspect as well as the battery life. U better have a option to free spool this.
    • Bearsheet4brains to the rescue.
    •   Then the bad wookies landed, trying to get everyone to believe they were gods and could cure everything with their magical potions, driving a few totally batpoop. Pretty soon there was name calling and bashing, and it just went on and on. Others that were smart left, and the ones still there continued arguing about what kind of people and things were better, with no respect for anyone or anything, since the gods no longer stepped in and stopped it, except to change words that had no meaning anyway. Pretty soon, it was all arguing wookies and people and other creatures, until the land of the forum exploded, throwing all the creatures spinning  out into space, where they formed their own little galaxies, and soon they all  started arguing and preaching and complaining and.....
    • Here is how the math works out on the 100 holes per day.  First off, not every hole gets fished.  Secondly, I am not just drilling holes for myself.  When I am with my kids or an older person or fishing partners who don't understand where the holes need to located on a particular area I might drill all the holes for 4 people to hole hop.  Thirdly, ice thickness plays a roll.  I will drill many more holes in a day on 16" of ice than 30".  I know this may be hard for some to understand but some people really truly actually will drill 100 holes in a day.  I am a very crafty ice fisherman who has adapted to extreme cold weather by using a portable "flip over" shelter and propane heater to keep myself warm and my equipment from icing up.  Yes, even when hole hopping.  That's why they call it a portable.  Haha.
