gear problem

hi.. i got a 87 johnson 40hp motor and when i put it in gear(forward/reverse)it doesn't catch into gear and make a clicking sound.. does anybody have any clue or know whats could be wrong with it? THANKS

I'd check to make sure you're shifter is shifting everything correctly under the hood (getting full motion). If it's not that it's very likely something internal to the lower unit... I agree with Fins - likely a clutch dog.
