Secrets for Determining Between Females and Immatures?

Birdsong

Recommended Posts

I have never had orioles or rose breasted grosbeaks beyond May in my backyard. It is a delight to have both coming this summer--the grosbeak to feed and the orioles to shower in the pond fountain. Is it difficult to determine the difference between females and immatures, or are the experts among you adept at it? What should I be looking for in the oriole?

Sarah, I would say this is a young of the year Oriole by the look of the beak. The beak lacks the true shape and color of the adults. That’s about all I could tell you on this bird as far as the difference between the two.
