folke2000
Maybe someone can help my brother in law diagnose the problem? He states that his boat was making a bit of a whirring noise when in gear and under power. Further investigation revealed the lower unit was quite low on oil and it was ugly black. A few metal shavings were picked out of the drained oil too. I was thinking maybe lower unit bearing? Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks for any help....Folke

boatfixer
Only a disassembly will tell for sure, but I'm thinkin' you will find the gear teeth are chewed up as well as burned bearings. Black nasty burned oil is not a good thing.
folke2000
Now the big question....Is this something that the average guy can tackle or are there special tools etc needed? To be clear, this is a late model Evinrude 40 h.p. Thanks everyone for the advise.Folke
