Optimax 135 blowing 20amp fuses

LivingTheDream

Question

I have a optimax 135 that when I try to start it up it blows the 20 amp fuse. I can turn the key to the "on" position and everything works fine (radio, motor tilt, gauges..) but as soon as I try to start it up it blows the fuse. Any ideas what I should check?

Thanks

The trolling motor, I my opinion, should have it;t own circut and be fused alone with wire of the proper gague. I would start the circut at the batterys. Go one gague heavyer wire that ios called for, I didn;t, then I got a bigger elec motor and had to rewire.

No expert in wiring issues, but it sounds like a short.

I had a similar issue when I was on a fishing trip to Lake of the Woods. Turned out I had a short in the wire inside the ignition box. 1 wire rubbed on metal for years, and when I powered up the main motor the fuse would blow.

4 hours later, lots of tool searching, crawling under the dash...I fixed it and we were finally fishing.

I'd follow the wires and inspect from the ignition back to the starter? Starter failure? Just guesses. May be time for a trained mechanic to diagnose.
