  1. Brown's Clearwater West Lodge

Same experience for us two years ago. The fishing is not that good either but the owner will tell you different when you call to inquire. 20 years ago, maybe more, this was a good place to fish but has dropped dramatically. If you are looking for lake trout there are dozens of good bodies of water in the same area.
  2. Without a doubt there was winter mortality. Hearing many reports of numerous dead birds under roosts and nearby. Have seen a few dead myself and also haven't seen nearly the amount of birds typically using our fields. I am in western Wisconsin.
  3. Looking at the yesterdays satellite imagery it looks like most of Lake Michigan is ice free. Anyone putting boats in north of Milwaukee yet?
  4. Saskatchewan anyone?

Just back from 8 day trip in north central SK. Tons of ducks but the geese were just starting to trickle in. The lack of Specks was disappointing. First time in many years we didn't limit out on darks. Was a great trip all around though and if you are just heading up you are hitting it perfectly.

Is there any camping near Port Wing? On the lake would be nice!

Definitely orange and anything with purple in it. All were 6in shallow running raps. 60ft of line behind the board. When they hit it was awesome. Jumped 3ft out of the water. No clue how deep the raps were running but I am guessing pretty close to the surface. Supposedly there is a formula to figure that out but I have no clue what it is. Started running 20ft behind boards and ended up being much farther. Maybe because they were so shallow?

A little late with this report but overall I would say my first Lake Superior trip was a success. Unfortunately we didnt get to really utilize the downriggers as all the fish we caught were on the surface in less than 20 ft of water. Using planer boards and stickbaits we ended with 5 lakers, 6 coho and 1 chinook. Fished 2 days for about 5 or 6 hrs each day and the last day just for an hour as it was too nice out to pass up before heading home! We did lose a few as well and had one on that felt quite heavy. One of the coho's was pushing 5 lbs or more. I don't know if that is considered good fishing but it was definitely fun trying something new. I am really chomping at the bit to run the downriggers so pretty sure it won't be long before I head back. Thanks to everyone who helped out with the info!

Thanks! When you are talking spoons are you talking the kind you would cast for pike or something different? I was given two tackle boxes of spoons but they are a much lighter weight and almost bendable. Any clue what trolling speed to focus on? As you can tell this is all new to me. Hopefully I will have a picture or two to share when we get back. Thanks again.
  11. Making our first trip to Apostle Islands next weekend and was wondering if I could gte some advice? I just rigged my boat up with downriggers and was hoping someone could steer me in the right direction on where to start my adventure. Mostly want to fish lakers but wouldn't mind trying for some salmon as well. We are camping north of Bayfield and using the casino marina. I don't even know what tackle to use or what pound wieghts! Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  14. Thinking of skipping our yearly walleye destination and trying for lake trout this summer. Does anyone have a suggestion on the better lakes to fish for them. Looking for size/catch and release. We usually go to Manitoba or Ontario. Any info would be appreciated! Thanks.
  15. Down rigger question

Thanks everyone. Lots of good info. So now another question. I purchased 8lb weights and someone told me I will need at least 10lb. I will be mostly fishing Lake Superior and Lake Michigan for trout and salmon. What do you think?
