The other morning my truck started ticking really loud. Never heard it do this before. 110,000 miles. Oil level is good. The noise doesn't go away. Is there a lifter that is bad or sticking? Any fixes? The noise will fluctuate with the rpms. The truck ran flawlessly before and never beat on the truck. Any ideas?

engine size?

Isn't there a t.s.b. for collapsed lifters? I dunno.

Experience is more important than knowledge

I have found that Experience is expensive.... smirk

Is it possibly a exhaust manifold leak? Sound just like my 2001 6.0 engine. Noise gets a little quiter after the engine warms up and the gasket seals a little better.

Bad / clogged lifted in number 6 cylinder. My mechanic suggests to replace all lifters on that side. Wow what a bummer. $1000 later

1/2 can seafoam = $3.50.....if the lifter was salvageable I would have tried it first. I have never had it not work on a gm with lifter tick.

That worked on my old 198k k1500 a couple weeks ago. I hadn't driven it in quite some time (weeks/months?...) and heard the telltale tick. About 1/4 can (at best) Seafoam and the tick is gone. Happened one other time as well, usually after a long "sit" of unuse. Airjer, do you always change the oil after a 100 or 1000 miles, or just go to next oil change? Last time I ran it hard for about 100 miles, and changed. This time I have about 400 miles on it without changing. Thanks for info.

either way. I like to change it as soon as the noise is gone and the engine is up to temp.

I had an S-10 blazer a couple of years ago that the owners where hearing impaired. The thing came in with a shot glass of oil in the pan and well over its service interval and making all kinds of lifter noise. Changed the oil first and that took care of about half the noise. Ran a half a can of seafoam in the new oil for about 3 minutes and it was purring. Changed the oil again and it was good to go. until it came in about a year later with one of the rear rotors worn paper thin and the caliper piston popped! shocked

This was more of a hard ticking noise. I had talked to the mechanic about putting seafoam in there. He said he didn't think it would help or take care of the problem. The AFM lifters GM is having problems with them going bad and recommend replacement. I guess i could have tried seafoam first. I know after its fixed i will be putting some additives in every once in a while.

What is your oil change interval?

I had a Grand Prix with a 3800 with a ticking lifter. A mechanic I know recomended I change oil and put in 4 quarts of 15w-40 diesel motor oil and one quart of ATF, run it for a day and change it back to regular 5w-30. Worked like a charm!

The oil was changed at the dealership. I put about 1200 miles on the truck since I purchased it. Having had a chance to change oil. I believe there was synthetic oil used in the truck. Sticker noted oil change in 10000 miles. Would be nice if the dealership would pitch in and help me out but I've had the truck since may 1st.
