Ice Gear Sleds - light, non 4-wheeler / snowmobile gear sleds

Who has a sled that works for their portable, hand auger and gear that is not a half a million dollars like the ones made for pulling behind a 4-wheeler / snowmobile. I am looking for a light one to just carry the basics by hand. Someone has to know of a kids sled or something else that works just as well without getting the heavy, pricey 4wheeler - snowmobile ones?

I agree with you!

I ended up buying the big HSOList.com sled and then bought their cover also. the sled might be shorter than what I need. I will take a picture once I set everything in it and see how it fits. It was about $95 total.

I have some skis and boards that I thought about raising the sled so there is less surface touching the snow to make pulling it easier.

Build a Smitty Sled! Build the base and you can put any type of tub on top or cheaper sled. The base with skis and 2x4's will be light and takes apart easy. (use cross country skis for super light). But then this takes the brunt of the contact when hauling the basics and you don't have to worry about the cheap sled so much. Here is a photo of a Smitty Sled and it packs down great. mount a cheap kids sled on top for the gear. I can't link to it directly as there is a long thread on this "$15 Homemade Smitty Ice Sled" on another forum. But if you do a Google search for the above in quotes it will get you there. I love my setup, I even put my otter Cabin on top to haul in deeper snow.

for easy transport

I think I may have found one for $19.99 at wally world. A 2 kid \ person snow sled that is just as big as some of the otters, pelicans, jet sleds etc. but less than half the price. Only difference I can see is side height but a few bungie cords will solve that.

All depends on how big you need it to hold your gear.

FF has these.

Shappell Jet Sled Jr.
43 in. L x 21 in. W x 8 in. H
$29.49

Shappell Jet Sled 1
54 in. L x 25 in. W x 10 in. H
$49.49

Wild Sport Sled
Small - 44 in. x 22 in. x 9 in. $31.99
Medium - 55 in. x 24 in. x 10 in. $39.99

Hope I'm not violating any rules but otter Outdoors has a line called Team Wild and they make ice fishing sleds. I have the one smaller size that I got on sale at the orange farm store for $30 I believe... I know it was less than $35. I've used it 2 seasons for ice fishing now and one summer of hauling wood and rocks around behind my tractor on my property. All in all it's held up great, it's dirty from the summer but otherwise no holes, punctures.... even the rope it came with has handled the added summer abuse fine.

I have a team wild ice house also platformed on the larger team wild sled and it's going on it's 4th year no problems.

I don't know. I tried using one like that (larger kids snow sled) last year for pulling my stuff to the lake using bungees to keep everything on and I came away less then impressed. Stuff kept falling off, the sled wasn't rigid enough to support the tension from the bungee, wasn't as much room as I thought, etc. Personally I would go with the KL Industries utility sled (also on that wally world webpage) for $25.

I also used to use a large kids style sled and after the fifteenth time stopping to rebungie things, or hitting a snow drift and the whole darn sled tipping over, I finally just went out and got a jet sled, everything fits and if it don't fit, I just stack it up and bungie it the higher walled wider sled works great no matter who makes it.

If you dont try, you will never succeed

i have an otter sport medium sled. Paid 40 for it last year. i beat the H E double hockey sticks out of it and it took evey bit last year. i would hook it to my tow ball and drag it all over the ice instead of loading everything in the back of my suv. i would pile everything in it and bunge the tar out of it and go. still looks fairly new. for 40 buck if it last 4 years. thats only 10 bucks a year. not to bad in my opinion. Its also light at only 12 pounds. You get what you pay for. I'll tell you that it was much better built then my clam sled for my guide house.

Sled

I use this sled also. I fit my hand auger, hub house, buddy heater, chair and fishing gear. I use a large hockey bag to put my gear in. In snow the width of the sled is the largest factor for how hard it pulls. The emsco is about 16" wide. If you like to punsih yourself get a wide sled.

Could always go with a Strikemaster Glide-Lite. I did that and am modding the thing like crazy. 8 Rod tubes, auxillary battery, mini ram mount for the GPS, soon to add lights and make an auger mount for it. Just about ready for first ice. Will have it all done soon.
