Never have owned a canoe before but im assuming it has to be licensed? Style I have has a square stern and will be used with a motor most of the time.

Yup, you have to register it. Same place you register your car. Go to the DNR website to find out more.

http://www.dnr.state.mn.us

It's under Licenses/permits/regs then click watercraft.

Take my advice....I am not using it anyways.

It is a 3 year license. You get license stickers just like you get tabs for your car and a card to carry in your wallet or store somewhere. You can do it online or at the DMV. I think they even have a sheet online for you to bring in so you're all ready when you go to buy the license. Its very simple.

If you use a motor most of the time you will also have to note that in the appropriate box when filling out your permit application. That also means you will have to display your boat number along with the permit sticker. I have a canoe that I use a motor on and the boat number is on it. My other canoe, that I use strictly for paddling does not.

Even if using an electric motor, you still need the numbers on it...

Your canoe will still need to display the license tag with the year it expires on it, but it will not require boat numbers.

If it is motorized, then it will require the numbers.

The registration is for all boats, you just mark down what categories your boat falls into.

In Iowa you have to license a canoe just like any other boat. You need to display the numbers on both sides and the registration is a three year period. The place you go to register the boat is not the same as car licenses. It is the Recorders Office at the court house. Same place where we license our atv's and get our hunting and fishing licenses as well... smile
