I once visited a quarry in Wisconsin where they sold and distributed large granite Wisconsin bolders. The owner's kids were present and there was a large pile of split field stones. I asked the kids how they split those field stone and they showed me a very large maul and they simply hauled off and wacked the stones to split them. They told me it was punishment if they screwed up at school or something. Good Luck.

There is a device called a Hydrasplit, made by Park Industries, intended for splitting stone. It may be available for rent at some locations. Foot pump a small bottle jack, two steel jaws, loud noise = split stone. Good Luck!
