BLACKDUCK AREA FISHING REPORT
May 16, 1999
by Kev Jackson

What a difference a week makes!! The weather was spectacular this weekend, and one could make the case that it would've been wonderful to be on the water even if the fish weren't biting. Fortunately, one doesn't have to make that case, because the fish were biting. Most area lakes were producing at least some walleyes...and a couple were doing much better than that!!

Let's start with the hottest lake in the north country...and that's Blackduck Lake. Reports all week have indicated that there were plenty of walleyes to be caught on Blackduck Lake. Jim Joy calls the Blackduck Lake bite "spectacular!" Just about everyone is catching fish, and the vast majority are getting limits.

Top bite is a jig and minnow bite, with a slip bobber and minnow also producing. Jim was having tremendous success vertical jigging at 10 feet. The sizes were very nice. There were a lot of 13 inchers being released, but plenty in the 16 to 17 inch range.

Jim said no reports of anything really big. As far as hot spots...wherever there's structure. Every piece of structure on the lake had boats on it.

The fish are producing all day, but the evening bite is the best. Still a pretty good after noon bite, and if you want a spot at the access, that may be the time to go.

Jim notes that Gull, Island, Round and Dixon Lakes are also producing walleyes right now.

NOTE: Kev Jackson is the host and producer of "Fishin' Paul Bunyan Country", a daily fishing show spotlighting fishing news in the Bemidji area. If you're in the Bemidji area, you can hear "Fishin' Paul Bunyan Country" on Continuous Country KB101 weekdays at 12:50 p.m. and again at 5:30 p.m...and Saturday's at 6:10 a.m.
